Duke Energy has recently submitted a comprehensive resource plan to the state of North Carolina, outlining its commitment to transition away from coal and decrease carbon emissions. The plan, known as the Carbon Plan Integrated Resource Plan, sets ambitious goals for Duke Energy, including the retirement of coal usage by 2035 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in compliance with North Carolina's clean-energy law.
To replace the retired coal plants, Duke Energy's plan includes the development of innovative infrastructure such as an advanced nuclear site, hydrogen-capable natural gas plants, and an expansion of solar and wind energy facilities. With these alternative energy sources, Duke Energy aims to ensure a reliable and affordable energy supply while meeting the increasing demand of a growing region.
Kendal Bowman, the North Carolina President of Duke Energy, has emphasized that the plan offers a sustainable path towards cleaner energy without compromising grid reliability or affordability. By adopting advanced technologies and diversifying its energy portfolio, Duke Energy remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of the community while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
The submission of this resource plan initiates a regulatory process with the North Carolina Utilities Commission. Public hearings will be conducted to gather input and ensure transparency before the commission issues its final order by the end of 2024. Simultaneously, Duke Energy has also filed the same resource plan in South Carolina on August 15, further highlighting its dedication to a sustainable energy future.
