President Joe Biden is set to travel to Las Vegas to announce an impressive $8.2 billion funding allocation for ten major passenger rail projects across the United States. This investment aims to facilitate the development of high-speed, electric train routes, which could potentially connect Nevada and California, as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Among these projects is a proposed 218-mile train route linking Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, California, located approximately 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Once completed, this railway has the potential to serve over 11 million passengers annually.
An additional beneficiary of this funding is a groundbreaking electric rail line that is poised to become the nation's first high-speed route. This line is expected to traverse California's Central Valley, extending all the way from San Francisco to Los Angeles, with trains reaching speeds of up to 220 mph.
Although the funds allocated by the president will not cover the entirety of these projects' costs, this investment demonstrates the Biden administration's dedication to promoting train travel in a country that has traditionally embraced fast cars and open highways.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg shared his thoughts on this initiative during a conference call with reporters, stating that these developments aim to deliver world-class passenger rail service that Americans can rightfully expect.
In addition to the aforementioned projects, other train initiatives receiving funds include the improvement of heavily traveled corridors in Virginia and North Carolina. The long-term goal is to connect Richmond and Raleigh through a comprehensive rail network. Furthermore, funding will be allocated towards enhancing a rail bridge over the Potomac River to bolster passenger service in Washington. Train corridor upgrades in western Pennsylvania and Maine are also part of the plan, along with expanding capacity at Chicago's Union Station, one of the busiest rail hubs in the nation.
Biden's Visit to Las Vegas and Los Angeles
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, announced that President Biden will be visiting Las Vegas to address the recent shooting at the University of Nevada. This tragic incident took the lives of three people and left one person injured. Additionally, President Biden will be attending a fundraiser in Los Angeles, where he will be joined by notable figures from the entertainment industry.
It is worth noting that this trip was planned before the shooting occurred. However, it is no surprise that the President's focus during this visit will be on train service, as he is a strong advocate for passenger rail travel. Over the years, President Biden has championed numerous federal spending investments in this area. In fact, just last month, he announced $16 billion in federal investments for rail travel along the busy Northeast Corridor.
Having spent 36 years as a senator, President Biden has significant experience traveling between his Delaware home and Washington. He proudly shares that he has logged over 1 million miles on Amtrak trains.
Although realizing high-speed rail in California presents challenges, given its position as the first project of its kind in the United States, efforts are underway to make it a reality. However, the project has faced extended deadlines and cost overruns.
Funding for the project has come from prior federal grants, a bond fund approved by voters in 2008, and revenue from the state's cap-and-trade climate program. However, this falls far short of the estimated costs of over $100 billion.
Even though California Republicans have been consistently critical of the project, some state Democrats have also expressed skepticism recently.
While progress in terms of construction and land acquisition is evident in the Central Valley, Brian Kelly, the CEO of the project, acknowledges the importance of additional federal funding for its advancement. The Biden administration has demonstrated support for the project by reinstating nearly $1 billion in federal money that was previously revoked by the Trump administration.
Addressing concerns about rising costs and delays, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recognizes the challenges that come with being the pioneers in this field. Nevertheless, he maintains confidence in the ability of these projects to deliver.
Overall, President Biden's visit to Las Vegas and Los Angeles serves as an opportunity to address urgent matters while also highlighting his commitment to enhancing passenger rail travel in the United States.
