"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."
This memorable quote, often attributed to Winston Churchill, has found its way into the political arena. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis recently invoked these words in a video message, announcing the suspension of his Republican presidential bid.
However, the International Churchill Society begs to differ. As an organization dedicated to celebrating the enduring values of the iconic prime minister who steered Great Britain through World War II, they have conducted extensive research on Churchill's vast literary repertoire. Their findings reveal no evidence of Churchill ever uttering this particular phrase.
Interestingly, while many insist that Churchill deserves credit for these powerful words, others attribute them to Abraham Lincoln. However, even after meticulous examination of the Lincoln Archives, no trace of this statement has been found.
The International Churchill Society urges caution against perpetuating these false quotes, cautioning that they are merely products of popular mythology rather than genuine remarks by Winston Churchill.
While the true origins of the quote remain uncertain, it is worth noting another insightful saying by Churchill: "Success always demands a greater effort."
At the time of writing, the DeSantis campaign has not offered any comment on why they decided to utilize this quote.
